Julie,
I have the same problem with WMT. Since I have many static pages and don't really rely on the products.asp or categories.asp pages and don't have direct links to them on the site (Google still manages to find them), I set URL parameters under "Configuration" to cat - sorts - No URL's mode - other - No URL's refurl - narrows - No URL's prod - specifies - Every URL pg - sorts - Let Google Decide
Since doing this, the number of duplicate tags reported by Google has dropped.

Julie, I get those too but I thought it was because I have an item in more than one category.
Are you sure Google is counting this against you?
I thought there was discussion on this previously.

Thanks marshall.... I have blocked the PARTNER under configurations and will see about some of the others. Weird, though... as I have a snip of code that is supposed to block that on each page, but it still was picked up by Google.
Beatrice... I honestly don't know but my site has pulmetted from search results on Google. Anything I can do at this point to help it struggle back up is worth an effort. With the upcoming loss of Google Products this fall... I see a major decrease in sales for us unless I do something. Sad to see so many years just thrown away because once again, buyers won't find my site.

Judy - Bites, doesn't it? It's funny how Google hasn't really announced how much it's going to cost. Maybe there will be so much protest that they will do like SortPrice does, you can pay per month or do a free one where they show limited products.
I switched over to using cat name rather than the number... so hopefully that may clear that up. Although it would still be a duplicate, I guess. I really need to finish creating static pages for all my categories now...

I use category names and don't get this same error ... And I do have products in multiple categories. Maybe that change will help!

You can set:
nocatid=true in your includes file and the "cat=nn" part of the query string will go away

You can tell Google how to handle this in your wmt account.

Hi all!
I'm back to this topic again... trying to repair all of this.
Apaprently GWM has changed... When I go to URL Parameters it no longer gives you the options like before. It now gives you 2 options:
Does this parameter change page content seen by the user? No: Doesn't affect page content (ex: tracks usage) Yes: Changes, reorders, or narrows page content
Which should I choose for these?
prod cat pg man (?? I'm guessing manufacturer?) review ro (??) PARTNER - this is set to No source
My main site is still suffering in the search results and I don't want to make things worse.

I should add that if you choose Yes Changes, reorders, or narrows page content.. it then makes you pick from these:
How does this parameter affect page content? Sorts Narrows Specifies Translates Paginates Other
Which URLs with this parameter should Googlebot crawl? Let Googlebot decide (Default) Every URL (the page content changes for each value) Only URLs with value ___________ (may hide content from Googlebot) No URLs (may hide content from Googlebot; overrides settings for other parameters)
Now I'm even more confused!

I seem to have the same problem. I have set nocatid=true and the site itself no longer create the cat extension (when your browsing) but google keeps finding /proddetail.php?prod=texcraftluganoblackcurtains&cat=20 /proddetail.php?prod=texcraftluganoblackcurtains I don't want to create static pages for each product as they sometimes change quickly but with the panda updates I have to find a way of stopping google finding " &cat=20 " |

Hi,
I set the cat parameter to sort and then chose let Google decide.
I've had nocatid=true since June but Google does seem to still pick the cat up.
I've also continued to change the rest of the dynamic category pages over to static in the hopes to get rid of all the duplicate meta descriptions.
I uploaded a new site map.. so I'll wait and see what if any of this has an effect.

I started another thread in the php section to see if anyone else would know. http://www.ecommercetemplates.com/support/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=89881&SearchTerms=new,canonical,tag It seems as though you can add a canonical tag to stop the cat being re-indexed.

Hi, We have been going through the same hoop having been dumped down the rankings. All my cat's have static pages but we only have 1 proddetails page with the same meta detail showing for every product! Have I missed a way of assigning individual meta data to each product?
Or do I have to remove the option of viewing full product details and stick with less information in the category pages?
creating static pages for every product would be a complete nightmare, we have 2 sites affected with several thousand product lines.
Any suggestions, while I am at it recently re-launched this site in ecom:
