Is there an option or way of forcing the shipping option/selection “please select”?
We get a lot of request to change shipping after they place their order (they seem to blow right past it), since it automatically defaults to the lease expensive shipping, this creates problems with charging for the change in shipping.

Hi there isn't a feature to force a particlar shipping selection as default but showing the choices with radio buttons might help.
If you would like to present the available shipping options as radio buttons rather than the default drop down choices then set the following . . .
$shippingoptionsasradios=TRUE;
