Hi,
We stock very limited products that come and go all the time, sometimes we only have one item of each product in stock.
Its become a little bit of an issue that it looks like there are a lot of products out of stock and we worry that this is annoying for shoppers. These products come back into stock at times, so we use the notify me when out of stock option a lot.
My question is, if we were to click the display radio button so that the product was NOT showing on the shop itself, would this start a rank decline of the site itself?
A quick test shows that the products if searched for on a search engine would still show when clicked on a link from other sites/search engines which is great, then the customer can click the notify me when out of stock option.
I just worry that the ranking would slip, or would this not be the case?
Any suggestions of what to do in this case...
Thanks |

Hi as long as the page title and text remain the same then it won't affect the search engine positioning however other things affect may affect it such as Panda update. But what I've found over the years is to not panic and things seem to get back to normal in a few days after one of googles famous updates.

Thanks for getting back to me...
So by not displaying some items, then possibly later on you dont think that would affect the raking at all? Would the item itself lower down the search results after a few scans?
Thanks |

Hi there is a difference between setting a item on notify when back in stock and completely removing the item. If the item is disabled completely then yes it will affect the search engine ranking for that page, but if you leave the item online with notify when back in stock then it will not have a affect on the page in the search engine.

I would basically be taking off products for now by clicking off the 'display products' option within product admin so that when customers are on the site the out of stock products won't show (the ones I have clicked as dont display)
But the idea is that customers when searching google and still see a result they can click on this and it does show allowing them to use the notify me option?
Do you think this method will work?
The products will be removed from the sitemap automatically so will this affect things?
Thanks for your advice so far.

Hi no taking it off display will remove it from the site and defeat the purpose of keeping the text on the page for the search engines.

Why would it defeat the purpose of keeping the text on the page? It would still allow people to link through to the site from search engines results and then use the notify when in stock option, but when on the site it wouldn't be annoying to browse as a lot of items would be out of stock.
My questions is if this would affect site and product ranking doing this method?
Thanks |

Hi if you disable the product then the link from the search engines will go to a page that says Sorry this product is no longer available.

Leave the display box checked and instead, open your products.php page and add this before the incproducts.php includes line:
$noshowoutofstock=TRUE;
This should prevent out-of-stock items from showing in your product listing, but will allow direct linking to the product pages via search results.
You would also add this to the search.php page if you want to keep the out of stock items suppressed in the search results.
Now, you will need to make sure you have a sitemap that includes the out-of-stock detail pages, so the search engines will still know to crawl those pages. You also may want to set up an "out-of-stock" category, assign it to products out of stock as an additional section, and set up a static out-of-stock page on the front-end that links to all the those products.
