Good evening,

On site fb-design.co.uk on page https://fb-design.co.uk/categories.php?cat=8 I have some links working and some not working.

Link Marc Cain is working with a url of https://fb-design.co.uk/products.php?cat=18

Link Estheme 100% Cashmere has a link of https://fb-design.co.uk/Estheme%20100%%20Cashmere

I do not understand how these links are created and I cannot see how to correct this incorrect link.

Can anyone please explain this?
Many thanks

John

Hi John, those links to the categories (or products) are automatically created, so there is no need to create them.
The only time you might need to get those links is if you want to link from your menu, or you are sending an email with a link.
The software auto generates those links there.

It looks like you are using the parameter in your includes to use the catergory name in the URL for the category links, and maybe you have inserted a static link in the admin for https://fb-design.co.uk/products.php?cat=18 - as the others all have the category name.

I'm not sure why the one is giving you trouble, but maybe the percent symbol is a problem. You should try to remove that and see if the link works.

Thanks David,
I see what you mean by the 100% being a problem in the url code.

I changed the 100% to 'all' in categories and after a time lag it eventually changed the link name.
When I hover over the link now the url shows as localhost/fb-design-responsive/Estheme all Cashmere
When I click the link the url is http://localhost/fb-design-responsive/Estheme%20all%20Cashmere and a message of
Object not found!
The requested URL was not found on this server. The link on the referring page seems to be wrong or outdated. Please inform the author of that page about the error.

This page was generated I believe prior to most products being entered.

The first 4 product boxes seem to work OK.
There after they produce an error and the urls are similar to http://localhost/fb-design-responsive/MaxMara%20Studio

I suppose there is no way to change the links manually?

I hope this all makes some sense!

Regards

John

Hi John
If the product name is...
Estheme 100% Cashmere
...then this will be "URL Encoded" so that browsers and google don't get confused. URL Encoding uses a system where it converts certain characters that may cause problems into a %dd alternative. For instance a space is %20. The percent char itself is then a problem so this is converted to %25 and your product name in the URL would end up as...
Estheme%20100%25%20Cashmere

For some reason it seems your % is not being encoded to %25 so I was going to look at the product in your site fb-design.co.uk but that product is not there, and you don't have SEO URL's set up on that site. Can you let me know where I can find this product to see why it is not encoding properly.

Hi Vince,
Thanks for the answer.
As stated in my previous post
"I changed the 100% to 'all' in categories and after a time lag it eventually changed the link name."

All products can be seen at http://fb-design.co.uk/vsadmin/adminprods.php
I notice this link starts with http:
where as the link below is https:

The errors seem to be ocouring on Page https://fb-design.co.uk/categories.php?cat=8

Class Roberto Cavalli No products are currently available in this category.
Creenstone Coats & Outerwear No products are currently available in this category.
Marc Cain Working OK
Marella No products are currently available in this category.

The rest of the links produce an error including "Estheme all Cashmere" where there are several test products and can be seen at https://fb-design.co.uk/products.php

Thanks for your help

John

Hi John
Ok, I see what you've done and it is because you set the "Category URL". If you set that it is because the Category URL exists on your server . . . that is you created a page for it. But as it doesn't exist you get a page not found. I think you just set this copying and pasting the Category Name to the Page Title Tag and Meta Description and just accidentally copied an extra row. If you check any other categories that have problems this will probably be the solution.

Hi John
The quickest way is this. Go to your categories admin page here...
http://fb-design.co.uk/vsadmin/admincats.php
On the left is the "Quick Entry..." menu and choose "Category URL" from that. Then just remove all those entries you have as I don't think any of them are for actual URL's. If you click on the first entry and then press delete, then click "Tab" and that will take you to the next entry and click delete and then "Tab" again and so on. Clicking tab will go to the category URL on the next line and select it each time ready to delete it. You should be able to remove all of them in a matter of seconds in that way. Any problems just let us know.

Hi Vince,
I cannot see
On the left is the "Quick Entry..."

I placed an image at net100test.co.uk/admincats.jpg

Perhaps I have the wrong version?

Hi John, click the "list categories" button and you will see the quick entry on the left.

Hi John,
You need to make a selection from the quick entry drop down and then follow the instructions from Vince

quote:
On the left is the "Quick Entry..." menu and choose "Category URL" from that. Then just remove all those entries you have as I don't think any of them are for actual URL's. If you click on the first entry and then press delete, then click "Tab" and that will take you to the next entry and click delete and then "Tab" again and so on. I have now deleted all of the links on that page on my localhost.

Is there a tutorial which explains how to proceed now?

Thank you

John

Hi John, I think that's it...
Check the category links - they should all be working now

Thank you all for your help.

I think I have found the way forward.
I found the User Manual and it helped a lot.

It has a very good clickable selection menu making sections easy to find.

Regards

John
