Free Add-On Shipping Workaround?

Posted - 10/15/2017 : 10:09:01 Hi, we're introducing some logo hats on our website, and since one hat can be slipped into our other products' shipping boxes without increasing the UPS or USPS label cost very much, we're looking for a way to ship the item free if purchased with anything else that ships at the normal fee, but to charge the normal shipping fee if the item is purchased separately. The only possible workaround we've found is to configure the item as extremely small and light (0.004 Lbs. and 0.001 x 0.001 x 0.001 inches), but this will cause problems in the event that someone buys a large quantity of hats. Has anyone found a workaround to accomplish this? Thanks in advance. - Paul D.

Configuring the hat to be infinitesimally tiny and light makes it free to ship with other products, but a problem occurs, say, if someone wants to buy ten hats and nothing else. In other words, USPS charges us $7.75 to ship one hat in a small flat rate box, $15.50 to ship two, etc. If we configure the product in the cart to be very tiny and light, a customer would be charged $7.75 shipping even if he buys 100 hats. We're looking for a way for the cart to charge $7.75 shipping if a customer buys one hat and nothing else, $15.50 shipping if he buys two hats and nothing else, and no additional shipping fee if he buys one or two hats along with any of our other products. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for this.
