This probably is simple thing, but what the best way to test the thanks page. Obviously when you just go to thanks.php it does not have any order info. Do you have to run a test order to see it "live"

Yep ...... and you can refreshing while making changes, it keeps sending order confirmations too.

What I do is set email as a payment provider and if I'm doing a lot of testing give that a login level and as I'm the only one with that level, I'm the only ones who sees email as a payment method on checkout.

After I make a test purchase to get to the thanks page, or shipping information, or any page like that, I view source and copy the information then save it as an .htm page so I can test layouts and so forth without having to work live. You may have to manually adjust links to CSS and images, but it is a lot easier, I think, then keep getting order emails or placing test orders.

NOTE: If the page is part of a dynamic web template, when you copy and paste the source code, remove the tags START TEMPLATE and END TEMPLATE before saving the page so it does not automatically attach itself to the template. That will make it more difficult to experiment with it.
