What would be the easiest way to do this --- and, what's the opinion on how it looks. My thoughts are that it doesn't look very good.

I don''t think it's a good idea at all - when things like this come up I think "Do the big boys like Amazon do it?" - if the answer is no there's a good reason for it. I think it detracts a lot from the content of the page.

If you are forced into it you can set a background on the class div.proddetail.

IMO it looks cheap, tacky & is distracting the eye away from the real content of the site. It shouts out 'look what we can do' which IMO is saying it's a dogs dinner. I always go by the less is more approach

IMO Putting a manufacturers logo on the page somewhere may be a good idea for some websites/products, but as a large (content) background, it's way too distracting for an e-commerce website.
