Hi, some of what you mention, is the very reasons I refuse to offer paypal express on my website.
So my questions is why are you offering it if it has some much risk of you losing customers?
Why not just kill it and use Paypal standard?

I didn't have a need to offer it prior to the update I made, which now messes with checkout step 2 & 3.

I would implement PayPal Standard but I was under the impression that it was being phased out. Is that no longer the case?

I seriously doubt paypal standard is going away.
Perhaps your thinking of Paypal Advanced payments...

I've also seen other posts with other platforms such as here: https://helpcenter.volusion.com/en/articles/424593-paypal-standard which may or may not be related.

If PayPal standard is here to stay, then I'll gladly incorporate it in and ditch PayPal Express.

Yes, I have been contacted several times by paypal with a giant push to use express, but I tell them flatly, I refuse.
I've even heard that paypal payments pro users "must" use it... Again, none for me, and I get no pushback from Paypal.
Perhaps they make an exception with us having a busy store, but in any case, unless I hear it from Paypal myself, I ain't buyin' it.
