When I open modify a product (/vsadmin/adminprods.php) top right is a Drop Down Box named Section.
The drop down selection list includes names as in Categories.

In the database there is a column named Section.
I it seems that the category number is entered into the section column. Is that correct?

Is there a reason category seems also called section?

That's correct, that's the category number and the terms category and section are sometimes interchanged.
