A friend of mine runs her own retail clothing business from a street shop & also has her own website. All her orders are posted via Royal Mail. The largest/heaviest item sent out is a box containing shoes.

About six years ago I'd mentioned about the RMs Click & Drop service & she's been using that fine with the postie collecting from the shop every day. The service isn't cheap but when weighed up against closing shop, going 3 miles to the local sorting office etc etc etc, it's certainly cost effective. Convenience always comes with a cost, somewhere!

Anyway, a few weeks ago RM stated that as her spend per year is under £17,000 + VAT (Vodka And Tonic), then they are introducing a monthly charge of £120 + VAT for the postie to nip in the shop, scan the barcode & throw the mail sack(s) in the van, exactly as he does now. Her current spend with RM is £14,000 / yr. That also includes posting of items not only sold from her webstore & street shop. That's a lot of money for a sole trader! The collection is already part & parcel of the Click & Drop service she is paying for.

It's almost two years since she has stopped selling internationally.

Out of curiosity what do others postal services cost where you trade from?

Hi Steve,

I was a little alarmed when I read this as we use RM and I wasn’t sure if they had changed their terms...

We use their 24 48 tracked business service rather than Click & Drop or their other business service.

You need to send most items 24 or 48 hour tracked (though you can use their other services, including international if you can face the paperwork ).
You need to send at least 1000 parcels a year (about 20 a week) and they collect daily for free.
The price for small or medium parcel is the same.
Unless RM are in the process of changing this, it may well suit your friend a lot better...

Steve

Hi Steve

Thanks for that. I will be calling over to see my friend on Friday & will discuss & find out more of what's actually going to happen. I know there won't be an issue of quantity of parcels/packets being sent as they can knock out on average about 10 - 30 a day
