In searching for this on the fora, I don't find anything that addresses this subject from a front end point of view. With recommended, best sellers, related, etc. on the proddetail page and the usual overhead of the products page (even with a limit of 45 items per page) can't help but worry about the weight and loading time. Any information on "place holders" etc?

There isn't a lazy loading feature I'm afraid. Might be worth running some speed tests with varying products per page to get a happy working level.
