I have a customer that's trying to place an order through Paypal Advanced using a Visa credit card & she keeps getting this error.

I can send a screen shot of the error, but I can't figure out how to attach a pic here.

Ok, the customer has tried submitting the payment through different devices (laptop & ipad) & still gets the same error msg.

In order to save the order, I ultimately had to send her a paypal invoice & payment was finalized with no problme which tells me there's some kind of error on my website.

Do you or other customers get the same error when you try that payment method? Have you tried putting the payment system into demo mode (in the admin payment providers page) and trying a test order?

I've had a couple other customers that didn't finalize payment & they were using Paypal Advanced but they didn't let me know of any problems. They just abandoned the cart.

Never tried the demo mode so not sure how to do that.

Go to the ECT admin and click on "Modify" for the payment method and you should see the Demo Mode checkbox there. Then try a transaction with the test card number...

I just tried it again to see if it would create the same error. I have the Paypal Advanced in "demo mode" and I got this error this time when I selected "credit card". I didn't do anything with the Paypal Express payment setup.


Some required information is missing or incorrect. Please correct the fields below and try again.

*Error: Paypal Express Checkout is not setup on this account.

Ok, I took the Paypal Advanced off "demo mode" and I don't get that "Paypal Express" error anymore, but I'm still getting this error.

So when you get this error you should be on the thanks page and there should be some parameters in the URL query string. Can you let me know by email (vince AT ecommercetemplates DOT com) what those are or tell me if the parameters are missing.

I just tried it again & it doesn't go to the "thanks" page. It stays on the cart.php page

I'm going to paypal manager to see if something has changed somehow.

I'm sorry, there was a problem with your transaction.

User authentication failed


So any customers that are paying with a credit/debit card won't be able to finalize payment.

Sinbad, thank you. You are correct that the authentication error was a password error. Still don't know what was or is causing the other error msgs though.

Issue seems to be resolved for now. I don't know what happened or what changed but I've had a couple orders without the errors.

Yes -- this was a big snafu at Paypal on Monday.
Paypal advanced was giving everybody the same error.
Error fixed itself at about 3:30PM CST.

Good morning. I have a site running PHP 7.1.11 at abigailsbakery.com using PayPal Payments Standard which is generated the same error message on the Thank you page as reported in this thread. I can share a screen shot and the URL from that page if that helps.

I'm not sure what fixed the issue for others.

This seems to be a PayPal glitch and we were hoping they would sort it out. But as it seems they haven't we've added a workaround to the updater just now and it's in the incthanks.php script for all updater versions (v7.1 v7.2 v7.3)
