USPS Rate API “Authorization Failure” Error

Now that UPS is returning errors when buyers request real-time rates, today we also noticed that USPS shipping has this response:

"Authorization failure. Perhaps username and/or password is incorrect."

Presumably this is unrelated to today's UPS issue.

The USPS setup initially worked correctly, but this error just appeared. We followed the USPS Web Tools setup instructions detailed in this thread:

https://www.ecommercetemplates.com/support/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=116159

Has anyone else seen this issue or found steps to troubleshoot it?

For context, we buy USPS labels through PayPal/ShipStation so we did not enable ACH payments when setting up the USPS Web Tools account. Could the lack of ACH setup cause this problem? Given USPS' terrible tech support, I’d definitely prefer not to authorize their bank withdrawals unless it’s absolutely required.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi Paul
Have you switched to the new oAuth system for USPS rates yet and if not, would that be an option? The instructions are on the USPS admin page in SHIPPING ADMIN.

As mentioned in the linked thread above, I believe our USPS Admin is already using the latest OAuth setup.

What’s unexpected is that when buyers request real-time USPS rates in the cart, they see an “Authorization failure. Perhaps username and/or password is incorrect” message.

However, when I open an order in the admin panel, click Calculate next to Shipping, select U.S.P.S. Shipping, and click Calculate, I get valid rates (shown below).

Does this difference point to any possible cause?

What is the callback URL, if any? UPS is asking for it while creating a new app/

Marshall, this thread covers a different issue — it’s about USPS, not UPS.

Here’s the URL of that popup:

https://www.example.com/vsadmin/shipservice.php?prodid0=AJ-J100M-A1&quant0=1&optn0_55=104&action=admincalc&destzip=70739&sc=1&sta=Louisiana&cl=N

That Calculate Rates popup (accessible from the Cart admin) currently returns valid USPS rates, but still shows “Too Many Requests” when UPS is selected.

Client switched to new API and when updating shipping, after entering zip code, there is a different error message now. I reuploaded the uspsshipping.php just in case. PHP site.

Warning: Attempt to read property "access_token" on null in /var/www/vhosts/xxxx.com/public_html/vsadmin/inc/uspsshipping.php on line 984

Warning: Attempt to read property "expires_in" on null in /var/www/vhosts/xxxx.com/public_html/vsadmin/inc/uspsshipping.php on line 986
The access token presented with the request is missing or malformed (not a JWT).
