Hi Vince,
Version PHP 7.9.3

It seems the shipping estimator isn't conforming to a free shipping discount when the scope is set to assign to individual products / categories

A shipping charge is displayed when products are added from any category that has the free shipping discount assigned, but does show free shipping at the final stage of checkout. Categories that do not have the free shipping discount assigned function as expected.

I've switched off the estimator for now just to save confusion. Can you test it your end and confirm there is a problem or is my set up incorrect?

Hi Phil
I set up a test here and it all seemed fine. The results of the shipping estimator are cached so could that be causing the problem? The way to force the estimator to refresh is to delete and re-enter the quantity for the product so the "Update" button appears then click that.

Hi Vince,
That's not working for me at all.

I've even switched to a different browser and shipping is still being displayed on the estimator for free ship items. Leave it with me for the moment and I'll set up a test environment for you and send you a url

Vince,

My site is the one having the problems with the shipping estimator. The shipping estimator is still turned off because of the confusion it was causing.

However, I just recently had an order come through where the shipping was supposed to be $20 USD & somehow the customer was charged $22.34. I've checked everywhere I can think of to see where that extra $2.34 came from & can't figure it out. I even asked Phil about it & he said he can't figure out where that number came from either.

Hi Kathleen
If you recreate the cart contents and shipping destination, do you get the same result?

I haven't been able to recreate the mysterious extra charges on the shipping, but it looks like Phil has. There's a test order he created & it has an extra $2.74 in the shipping. So, now that's 2 different amounts showing up mysteriously.

I just tried it twice using the same state (CT) the customer used & the shipping charges were an extra $3.54 the 1st time & $1.94 the 2nd time.

Ok, I tried it a 3rd time except I cleared the cache, closed out all the internet tabs, changed the address, changed the products, but kept the same state (CT) and it still charged an extra mysterious amount ($4.13).

Im not sure if this is related, but Im also having an issue. This cart contains 1 item with free shipping. And then the cart adds a random $1.53 shipping charge. It should be more money to ship those other 2 items.

When some items in the cart are charged shipping but others are discounted the shipping cost is calculated as a percentage of the total cost proportional to the percentage of items that are free or have shipping charged. The reason shipping works like this is because with the shipping carriers you can't get rates for different services with different items. In this case price based shipping is used and there is a case for weight / price based shipping to work in a different way but at the moment this is behaving as expected really.

Hi Vince,
Thanks for looking into this.
So in my clients situation, if I switch to weight based (it's currently price based), and set the free shipping products that are assigned by category to a zero weight I should get the expected results yes?

Phil,

That is problematic. I will assume the free shipping is using a carrier of your choice, e.g. UPS Ground. With a product weight of zero, a person could select say Overnight Express or Next Day Air (or something similar) and it would be free for them since there is no weight, but cost you a lot more than you accounted for in the free shipping offer. I know because I have tested this option for one of my customers having a similar problem.

Thanks for the info Vince.

Marshall what I will do is post free ground shipping. If someone decides to select next day, it will still ship ground.

That's not the case, it'll be set to weight based without using any of the APIs

I just thought I would bring the potential problems of setting weights to zero for, as I said, I have experimented with it and discovered the downside.

Well, it will change in that the free shipping amount will be proportional to the weight and not to the price, but it will still be proportional.

Thank you Phil!!!

For the specific products that needed shipping charges, he switched it weight based & after a couple of tests, it's working perfectly.
