Stripe has announced some changes to their system. Is the implementation in the Ecommerce Template ready for this?

This is the mail we got:
"Last month, we wrote to tell you about Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), a new European regulatory requirement that will require two-factor authentication on many online payments beginning 14 September 2019. You’ll need to make updates to your Stripe integration to prepare for these changes.

We’ve created tools in the Stripe Dashboard to help you understand how SCA will impact your business and what integration changes will be required. We recommend that you review this information and start planning for these changes soon to be ready for SCA. "

Greetings,

Jaap van Goor

Also had an email from Stripe today stating:

We wanted to remind you about required changes to your Stripe integration. Upcoming industry-wide regulation will require Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) on many European payments starting 14 September. Unless you take action, payments that aren't authenticated may be declined by your customers' banks.

Our information shows your business will be impacted by SCA, and that you still need to make changes to your Stripe integration to get ready for these new requirements. As this change may require additional software development, we strongly recommend that you start updating your integration as soon as possible.

Will this be taken care of by yourselves or is it something we will have to resolve individually on our sites?

Many thanks in advance.
Tim

I asked about this ten days ago and was told the cart changes to account for SCA were in progress. I'd expect to see something to cover this in the next updater.

The changes are all done by the way now. Hopefully in the next couple of days I'll get an update out.

Thanks Vince.
We started using Stripe when you started to offer this and actually quite a lot of customers use this and are happy about it.

Would you also consider supporting all other payment options Stripe offers? Like many international/local payments and not only creditcards?

Jaap

Hi Jaap
Sure, I'm open to suggestions and the new changes are out on Beta here...

Maybe this would be a good place to talk about changes to the stripe system. But as far as I'm aware for the moment the new Stripe.com checkout system will only take Credit Cards.

Hi Vince,

No Stripe also has several local payment options, that have to be implemented seperatedly. As far as I understand.

They offer for example Bancontact (Belgium), iDeal (Holland), and AliPay.

Hi Jaap
I found this page and it says you just have to turn these on in your dashboard...
https://stripe.com/en-nl/blog/european-payment-methods
I tried to give that a go, but as I have a test account it seems I need to activate my account first.

Hi Vince,

I am afraid it is not as simple as this. We have iDeal and Bancontact switched on, but they do not show in the Stripe implementation on our store.

Please check the documentation of Stripe it looks like these kind of payment options have slightly different implementation.

For example: [code]https://stripe.com/docs/sources/ideal[/code]

Jaap

In case any UK based Stripe users are reading this article I have added a topic about the UK regulator having granted an 18 month phase-in period for the Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) https://www.ecommercetemplates.com/support/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=111926

Jaap had posted about having other payment methods offered by Stripe to be supported by ECT. I'd also like to see that happen especially for iDEAL and SOFORT. iDEAL is the most common way in the Netherlands to accept payments and SOFORT is very common for German and Swiss customers. Basically as it is now in order to accept these kinds of payments you have to go through a third-party system which involves making custom payment providers mods. Of course there are continuous updates to these, so you hire a programmer to implement them and then it gets outdated so quickly that you are back to square one. Plus you have to make modifications to the ECT files with each update. That is not as big of a deal as having them not work all together.
I'm sure there are other ECT users who would like to be able to accept local payment providers more easily and without having to get into expensive or time costly mods. It seems like Stripe may be a solution?

Thank you.

Hi Crystal
I'll take a look at this when I get a chance. But wouldn't it be the case that Dutch / German customers would probably have VISA / MasterCard or PayPal accounts as alternatives anyway?

Thanks for looking into it Vince. No actually a lot of people do not use (or even have) credit cards. They prefer and are used to transferring payments directly out of the their bank accounts rather than credit cards. Direct transfers out of your bank is the most common way to pay in the Netherlands and I think also very popular in Germany and Switzerland, so if a website does not offer that, it seems very strange and inconvenient. Also the fees are generally much cheaper for merchants with this type of transfer as opposed to a credit card or PayPal. Of course you can link Paypal to your bank account and get funds out without a credit card but that is a hassle for a customer who does not already use PayPal.
I can't speak for other types of local payment types that Stripe offers because I'm not familiar with them, but I'm sure it is not for nothing that Stripe is starting to integrate with them.

I totally agree with Chrystal. iDeal for Holland, Sofort for Germany and Bancontact for Belgium are the most used online payment systems in these countries. We do have our own custom iDeal payment processor. But the Ecommerce template only allows for one custom payment processor, so we could not add one for these extra countries. Of course we can tweek the system, but an easy solution would be if the Stripe implementation can offer all of the payent options Stripe has to offer.

Creditcards are not very popular in Holland, Germany and Belgium. And as a large part of Belgium speaks Dutch we would really welcome the possibility to offer these local payment systems. Even when people have a creditcard they still hesitate to use this for online payments. Or they are at work and the card is at home etc.. Local systems usually work with authorization via the mobile phone and people out here are used to this.

Or …. maybe as most payment processors work more or less the same. Payment request in XML or JSON, confirmation etc.. It might be a good idea to have some kind of sample of a standard and wel documented custom payment provider implementation as a source for making my own local version.

And I would welcome a move of all payment providers implementation out of the long inccart.asp code. This way adding more than once custom payment provider would be easy.

In meta code:

If use PayPal
include PayPal module
If use Stripe
include Stripe module
If use Custom 1
include Custom module 1
etc..

Hi Vince,

Tried the new Stripe checkout. Setup on the Ecomerce Template side in our store seems easy. But when testing I get an error. Are there special things I must arrange on the Stripe side as well?

Greetings,

Jaap

Hi Jaap
Yes, I believe these must be enabled in your account. But what is the error? Maybe that gives more of a clue as to what is going wrong.

Hi Vince,

Thanks for the fast reply. Funny thing. I am now on a different pc and I get one step further. Maybe there was a delay in activation in our Stripe account?

We have no BanContact or Giropay as these are limited to Belgian or German banks. But it looks good and we will have to ask customers from these countries to test :-)

Greetings,

Jaap
