I have a couple of issues with PayPal Checkout integration:

1) When using PayPal Checkout Standard and card payments when there are loyalty points discounts added to the order:
After entering the card details and clicking the pay button, we get an error along the lines of "We're sorry, something seems to have gone wrong. We'll take you back to the checkout so you can try again."
This only seems to happen when the discount includes loyalty points. It will accept discount coupon discounts without issue. We don't use Gift Certificates so I've not tried those.

2) We're not currently using Checkout Advanced as the only advantage of using Advanced for us would be to enable GooglePay and ApplePay options but we can't seem to get these to work.
According to PayPal, we have everything set-up correctly at PayPal but we don't get the option of switching these on when we select "Use PayPal Advanced" in the ECT PayPal Checkout settings. They say that ApplePay and GooglePay are not being included in the JS SDK that is being loaded into the site?

We're currently using ECT PHP v7.8.0 but I am very reluctant to update to the latest version as I've made so many modifications but I notice that newer versions have a fix for other reported PayPal checkout issues so is it possible that the above issues have already been resolved in the latest version and if so, is it possible for me to update only the necessary files?

The problems with Google and Apple Pay have been sorted out in the latest version, yes. There are some notes here about enabling those...

Also, the problems with Loyalty Points seem to be fine in the latest version too and I've double checked those work here.

Would it be possibly work if I just replaced the file that handles PayPal checkout in my V7.8.0 with the one from the latest version?

The files that handled PayPal Checkout are...

vsadmin/inc/inccart.php
vsadmin/inc/incthanks.php
vsadmin/ajaxservice.php

It really wouldn't be a good idea to just change these files though.

I've tried everything but can't get PayPal Checkout to work properly with V7.8.0.
Like you said, it's not just a simple case of replacing a few of the v7.8.0 files that handle PayPal with the v7.8.6 versions, so for the moment, I've switched to the Elevon/SagePay/Opayo option using the onsite card integration and this works seamlessly.
I didn't want to use Elevon/Sagepay/Opayo with my new site as my old site runs on their form integration and their hosted checkout pages are not very customisable but the onsite option looks much cleaner.
Not too sure if they offer GooglePay and ApplePay payment methods though. I will need to get in touch with their sales department to find out.
